PROMOTIONAL OFFER We've teamed up with Marchese Racing and Cado Motus to offer, for the first time, a high-end Short Track skate at an extremely accessible price. This skate package features a Marchese One Racing Boot and a Cado Motus short track blade and is specially priced for clubs. Write us for a spec sheet. |
BONT Z - SKATE
|
This skate will replace the Apache in Bont's product line-up and will be in the same price range. The boot features 85% carbon (which we like) and will skip the thermoplastic to save weight (which we don't). We have ordered some in already and expect to carry a full size range as a stock item, in either 2-point or 3-point depending on the frames available (see Bont's news below). This skate will likely be reviewed in a future newsletter. |
|
SPEEDSKATE SOAKERS
|
Designed to keep your blades dry and rust-free, these high-quality thick absorbent soakers are available in black or navy and are only $9.99. We found the same product for sale elsewhere at a much higher price. |
NEXT EDGE JIG
|
This is the ultimate jig and an essential item for any serious speedskater. Nothing is more frustrating that trying to re-assemble the pieces of your jig in the exact same alignment as the last time you used it. This jig is completely foolproof. No matter which technique you use to sharpen your blades, this is the best jig available in the market and will last a lifetime. See our next newsletter for a product review. |

SWEET MARCHESE ZERO
|
Paul Marchese has introduced a beautiful new premum short track blade. This gorgeous blade comes standard with a 64HRC high speed steel blade and an oversize alluminum alloy tube.
We love the one-piece cup that mounts with a single screw. The runner steel is glued with a new type of high performance resin, rubber modified epoxy (The flow of the material has been optimized, preventing 'slump' and curing to a semi-rigid finish ideal to prevent stresses in components and optimizing the bonding of materials.)
From the components to the finishing to the carrying case, nothing has been overlooked.
Our price is $599, less than the $650 U.S. you will find online. |
MARCHESE RECORD ICE BLADES
|
Another stunner from Paul Marchese. We saw these long track blades at the Berlin marathon and their tall profile and hollow tubing made us drool. Currently available only as a special order, we will be testing them extensively next year to see if we feel their performance justifies a $1,000 price tag (ouch!) Stay tuned. |

Il Peloton is now carrying 3-piece blade guards for your long track and short track blades so you can protect your investment while getting to the ice. Available in a number of different colors. $19.99 |

INDUSTRY NEWS: BONT DISCONTINUES MAG FRAMES |
This news from Alex Bont at Bont Skates: The cost of our magnesium frames has increased to the point where they are no longer economically viable to produce. The retail price for any new orders would be higher than most people are willing to pay for them. |
So, once the current frames are sold out, all 3pt frames will be replaced with the new Aluminum S-frame7. The Sniper EVO IV will also be discontinued once sold out so if you want a set, please be quick. |

PRODUCT TESTING RESULTS: THE BEST WHEEL FOR THE TAZ
Well, because there are so many wheels to try. There are 4 major wheel brands, all of which make at least 6 different types of wheels. Do the math, and that's a lot of wheels to try. We tested over 20 different makes and models of wheels at high speeds on the Taz surface. Plus, conditions vary from day to day, depending on how clean the track is and the level of humidity inside the facility. So it was extremely difficult to get consistent conditions. WHAT WE WERE LOOKING FOR: Most of us are primarily marathon skaters, where the thing that matters most is roll. Vibration has some importance, since a wheel with no absorption on a bumpy surface causes muscle fatigue. At the TAZ, the issues are completely different. Flying around those tight corners at the high speeds made possible by the TAZ's unique Vesmaco-type (but not Vesmaco) coating means that grip is extremely important. Any wheel that did not have great grip in a tight corner at 40+kph did not make our recommended list (which eliminated over half of the wheels we tested.) Of those that remained, we looked for the best roll. Thanks to everyone who helped us test out wheels! |

The winner out of all of the wheels we tested was the Atom Whip wheel. It has great grip even on a dusty surface and beautiful roll. We recommend XX-Firm for skaters over 175 lbs and X-Firm for lighter skaters. |
The runners up were the Bont Mint Highroller and the Matter Nuclear, which performed about equally well. Since the Bont wheel is a great road wheel, we think its better bang for your buck. These are the top wheels available in 105mm. |
We had high hopes for the Bont Crossover, since it was made for Vesmaco tracks. But this wheel was too grippy for the TAZ at our speeds. Worth trying if you are slipping on everything else; or for a 300m dash. |
The Atom Bite, the MPC Road War and the Matter XG came out in the middle of the pack. Old-style road wheels like Hyper Stripe and Matter Supermundo are the hardest to recommend for the TAZ as they had the least grip. |
|
TIP#1: To perform well at the TAZ, a wheel must be clean and new. Do not use wheels that you've used outside. Have a special set of wheels just for the TAZ - they will do a better job and will last forever. TIP #2: Although the TAZ is an indoor facility, its surface varies from day to day, depending on the amount of dust and dirt on the track. A dusty track is a slippery track. Be cautious, especially when you first step out on the track. |
