MASSIVE PRICE REDUCTIONS

We are constantly striving to bring our clients the very best products with the very best service and the very best prices. When we shop, we look for really cool products that make our skating experience better. And we look for excellent value.

Recently, we've been "selective purchasing", or thinning the manufacturers' make and model offerings to the best ones and then buying them in bulk to improve purchasing power and availability. In this issue, we tell you about our choice for entry-level short track (last month we featured our high end short track package, the Marchese One). We also have great news about Bont's 2010 pricing reductions.

PRODUCT REVIEW: THE NEXT EDGE SHARPENING JIG

Ken Hart, formerly at Dimon Sports and a skater with the Indy Speed skating club, posted a very helpful article on sharpening speedskates where he has the following report:

The most important thing for a jig is that the skates are held in an identical position, every time you use it. To do this, a jig should be rigid, and not flexible. It should have a way to ensure the blades are level (up-stops) with each other and even (end-stops) with each other.
Some jigs have the ability to fold, or collapse. Although this sounds like a handy feature, it is not. Every time you break down, then re-assemble your jig you end up with a new alignment of the jig that most likely is not the same as the old position. . . Every time you change the position of the jig, you need to “sharpen to the jig”, before you can actually sharpen the skates. Even minor adjustments in the alignment of a jig will affect its ability to “reproduce” the same cut on the blades. This means that some sharpening will be required merely because the jig has been “adjusted” or “re-assembled”. This problem also exists if your skates are sharpened on a different jig.

After a lengthy discussion of sharpening techniques, Ken says: I used a ‘Next Edge’ for a week once working at Dimon sports, and sold my Maple immediately...

We agree and think this is the best jig ever made. The knob clamps are solid and give you the ability to place firm and precise pressure to hold your blades still. The end stops and up stops are goof-proof, perfect for the novice and a time-saver for the veteran.

While it costs alot, it is virtually indestructable and should hold its value well. A worthwhile investment.

Jig Stops

Side Jig

Jig LevellerJig in Use

The stainless up-stops with color coded shims in 6mm, 3mm and 2mm can be stacked in any order for a custom height to suit your blades.
The end-stops and up-stops, together with the rigid frame, store right on the frame and ensure that your blades are in exactly the same position every time.
The jig has a handy levelling knob so that it can be used on a surface that is not level and your blades will be true. Its patented stabilizing system makes it easy to use on uneven surfaces.  There's also a cut out in end for clamping to table or bench, but the jig is so sturdy we didn't find it necessary.
